5 Sparks to Fuel Your Week: The Adventure Continues

3 min read
After 30 years, across two industries, I closed a chapter that shaped my professional life, and I took the summer to celebrate it. Moments like this deserve more than a quick handoff to whatever comes next.

Spark #1 – Quote of the Week
"Defining moments shape our lives, but we don't have to wait for them to happen. We can be the authors of them."
Chip Heath & Dan Heath, The Power of Moments

Spark #2 – Thought for the Week
For 30 years, my corporate career gave me opportunities I never could have imagined when I started. I learned from extraordinary people, worked across organizations and cultures, traveled to places I might never have seen otherwise, and found work that genuinely energizes me: helping people understand themselves and one another, strengthening teams, facilitating conversations that matter, and helping leaders create environments where people can thrive.
That corporate chapter has now closed. I've officially retired from corporate life and moved full time into Rebecca Baybayan LLC.
I called my transition "The Adventure Continues" because retirement never felt like quite the right word. I'm not retiring from work that matters to me, I'm changing how I choose to do it.

That intentional celebration also reminded me that we need to do more of it.

In business, we can get so focused on the next goal, deadline, promotion, or challenge that we barely acknowledge what it took to get here. Those moments of recognition matter. Gallup's research with Workhuman found that well-recognized employees were 45% less likely to have left their organization two years later, and recognition also strengthens engagement and connection to culture.
Celebration gives us permission to pause long enough to say, "This mattered. Look at what we accomplished."

Spark #3 – Leadership Resource Spotlight
📖 The Power of Moments by Chip Heath and Dan Heath
The Heath brothers explore why certain experiences stand out while so many others fade away. They identify four elements that often make moments memorable: elevation, insight, pride, and connection.
We often celebrate the obvious milestones: promotions, retirements, major launches, and anniversaries. But the smaller moments count too. Someone taking on a difficult assignment. A team finally solving a problem they've wrestled with for months. A first presentation to senior leadership. A certification earned. A person quietly stretching beyond what they thought they could do.
The Heaths encourage us to look for occasions to celebrate rather than waiting for them to show up.
How to use it: Look at the next 30 days on your team's calendar and ask, "What deserves a moment?" Then create one. It doesn't have to be expensive or elaborate. Acknowledge the accomplishment, name why it mattered, and give people enough time to actually experience the moment before everyone races toward the next thing.

Spark #4 – Wanderlust Wisdom
Adventure has always been one of my core values, and maybe that's why "The Adventure Continues" feels so much more fitting to me than retirement.
Travel has taught me that moving forward doesn't mean forgetting where you've been. Every destination becomes part of the story. You carry pieces of one place into the next, even as the scenery changes completely. Our careers work the same way.
I'm carrying three decades of experiences, relationships, lessons, mistakes, opportunities, and growth with me into Rebecca Baybayan LLC. I'm not starting over. I'm taking everything I've gathered along the way and choosing where I want to go next.
Maybe that's one of the best things about adventure: you don't need to know every stop on the itinerary before you begin. Sometimes you simply need to know you're ready to go.

Spark #5 – Take Action
Before you rush toward the next goal this week, ask yourself what you skipped celebrating because you were already on to the next thing.
Then widen it to the people around you. Who deserves to hear, "I saw what you did"? What milestone has your team crossed? What progress deserves to be acknowledged?
Gallup notes that recognition can be as simple as a personal note or a thank-you, and that the most effective recognition feels honest, authentic, and individualized.
So celebrate something this week. Make the phone call. Send the note. Bring the team together. Raise the glass.
And if you're standing at the edge of your own next chapter like I was, take a moment to appreciate how far you've already traveled before asking where you're headed.
As for me, I'm ready to go. Rebecca Baybayan LLC is my full-time adventure now, and I can't wait to see where it leads.
Until next time, keep growing, keep leading, and keep celebrating the moments along the way.

The Adventure Continues.
