Last night I received a message from a longtime friend and mentor after a photo of us from six years ago appeared on his Facebook feed. He sent me a short message with the words:

“ Very proud of the woman you are. Great accomplishments by a great person.”

That note meant more than he probably realized. Recognition doesn’t need to be elaborate, because sometimes a few sincere words can matter more.

Research consistently shows that recognition strengthens both connection and performance.

Gallup research finds employees who receive regular recognition are 4-5 times more likely to feel engaged at work. The O.C. Tanner institute reports that organizations with strong recognition cultures are 12 times more likely to achieve strong business outcomes.

Recognition is often framed as a management practice, but at its core is a human one. When people feel seen, valued, and appreciated, they bring more energy, commitment, and care to their work.

A simple leadership habit to try: Notice something specific. Say it out loud. Make it genuine.

For example: "I noticed how thoughtfully you handled that conversation today. Your calm approach made a difference."

Specific recognition helps understand what matters and encourages more of the behaviors that strengthen teams.

Some of the most meaningful moments I’ve experienced are the small moments that happen long the way.

Travel and adventure often remind us to slow down and notice the moments in front of us. Recognition works the same way. When we pause long enough to notice and acknowledge someone, we create a moment that can stay with them far longer than we realize.
